Ainsdale Village Green Registration
Ainsdale Village Green was given to the people of Ainsdale by Charles Weld Blundell Estates in 1921 for their recreational use. In 1924 a war memorial was commissioned by the residents in memory of those local servicemen lost in the Great War and this was erected on the green. Each year a service of remembrance is held on Remembrance Sunday. The Green is used daily by residents for various activities and the Ainsdale Horticultural Society holds a village flower show and fete each year on the green.
After reading an article in June 2009 about registration, we checked and discovered that our Green was not registered under the Commons Act 2006. Whilst there were no plans for any development on the green, it was felt that it was important that The Green was safeguarded and once it has a secure permanent registration as a village green, then the land is protected from development and it becomes an offence to interrupt its use or enjoyment by the public.
We consulted our membership and they agreed that we should apply to Sefton Council to have The Green registered. It was a long process but in 2010 we advised by Sefton Council’s Legal Services that they were prepared to undertake the final procedure in the process of the registration, and it was finally completed in 2011.
Our Chairman, Tony Brough said was delighted with the application’s success, particularly as it guarantees the future of the Remembrance Day services.
He said: “I really think we can take pride in knowing now that when we are long gone other people will be standing on that same green and doing the same thing.”
Churches Together in Ainsdale, Ainsdale Horticultural Society and the Southport Branch of Royal British Legion also helped with the registration bid.
